Relational Trauma

What is relational trauma?

Relational trauma is a term that can be used to describe the long term mental health challenges of people raised in dysfunctional family systems. It is sometimes referred to as C-PTSD (Complicated PTSD) or Developmental Trauma. Relational trauma includes various forms of abuse and neglect as well as any experience that causes a trauma response in the body.  Some children might go through something traumatic and not have a trauma response while other children do. Therefore, the cause of the trauma is irrelevant, only that a trauma response was activated.
