EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and it is a therapeutic approach that research has shown to be an effective treatment for trauma. Generally, a client is asked to think about a disturbing memory while receiving bi-lateral stimulation in the form of eye movement (eyes tracking an object from side to side) which helps the brain to fully process the memory with current insight and time sequence (then and there versus here and now). Other forms of bi-lateral stimulation, such as tapping, may also be used. Not everyone is an appropriate candidate for EMDR nor is it the best approach for every client or presenting issue.
